Leaping Reindeer + a Giveaway!

One thing that's fun about designing for Sizzix is that you sometimes get a little surprise in your mail! A couple weeks ago I received a new die from the Sizzix Basic Grey collection. It was the Swirl and Snowflake die set from the Nordic collection. I love flourishes and this one is beautiful!

After mulling it over, I decided to create a card using both the new dies and adding one of my favorite elements - Pop 'n Cuts!

But I didn't stop at just Pop 'n Cuts - oh no! - I wanted to also try the spinner attachment that Karen Burniston came up with last month. My idea was to have a reindeer leap out from behind a tree. Amazingly, I figured out the mechanism with (almost) no problem and it worked!!

I'm not sure the snowflake was meant to work with the flourish, but I loved how they looked together! This is the first time I've used an Embosslit. It cuts and embosses your paper at the same time. I definitely need more of these! I covered both the flourish and snowflake with lots and lots of Rock Candy Dry Glitter. I wish the sparkle showed up better!

Here is a shot that lets you see how much dimension there is in this card. It's just so fun! The Sizzix Reindeer Flight die ended up being absolutely perfect for this idea. I didn't have any tree that would work, so I headed to my NEW Michaels (yay!) and scoured the die selection and found this perfect Christmas tree from Sizzix - fate! Since the trunks were a little short compared to the deer's legs, I added new trunks cut from kraft cardstock. The trees were cut from Kraft Core'dinations.

The pine cone embellishment was made with Tim Holtz' Tattered Pinecone die. I was playing around with it and decided to try to see if one of Tim's idea-ology Screw Eyes would screw into the base - and it did! I added a little bit of Snow Cap Dabber paint and Rock Candy Dry Glitter to give it a little sparkle.

I am so in love with the new MidWinter rubber stamps from Artistic Outpost. I colored the scene with Distress Markers and added a healthy dose of glitter. The Sizzix Ornamental die paired with the Mini Ornamental die creates the perfect frame. I love my Ranger Distress Markers and they just happen to be the theme for this week's Compendium of Curiosities challenge over at Studio L3!

One thing that's always so frustrating about pop up cards is how hard it is to show the motion. I took this little series of pics to try to give you an idea of how it opens to reveal the leaping reindeer.

Then I thought I'd also do a little video! It's pretty boring...just me sitting at the kitchen table, opening and closing the card, lol! But it's so much fun to see it in motion!

    I love your pop up flying deer it is amazing. I would absolutely love, love to win the die. I am addicted to pop ups eversince your father's day card. I think the sliding 3d pop up die is one of the best purchases I have ever made. My card making is more fun than ever. I even use it in art journals.

    Hi Shelley! I love the earth tones with the snowy blue tones on your gorgeous winter card. That tree die goes perfect with your TH deer die. I haven't tried Karen B's technique to swivel things with the opening of the card, but I've watched the video a couple of times. I just need to find time to play. I'm stuck on Fall projects atm.     Hello Shelly,

    this one is a "would love to win"...
    I went to the big londoncraftshow and on my wishlist were a few of the pop up dies of Sizzix, cause you can't find them around here in Belgium ( put probably difficult in the US too...). The show was great and I found a lot of stuff but NOT the Sizzix pop up dies....:/

    So, I give myself a chance here :)

    I already told you in the past in loooooove pop-ups but I still make them myself, not with a die... I still want to learn a lot more about pop-ups mechanics and I've seen Karen Burnistons example with the car. I still have to figure out how this works.

    Probably YOU did it right ! Love the peeking reindeer on the card.

    I completely recognize the feeling you have to open and close and open and close and.... the card. Feels like a kid with a fabulous toy :) My 19 year old daughter always consideres me to be "mad" when she sees me opening and closing my pop-ups....

    Thank you for sharing your art. You and Karen inspire me all the time. I took one of Karen's classes a couple of years ago in Pheonix. She was awesome and so was her project. I've been trying to get ahold of this base die for the pop-n-cuts since I first saw them and they are always sold out. I do have two of the inserts waiting for the card base.
