Frilly & Funkie - Chalk it Up!

Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing my card for the latest Frilly and Funkie challenge. It was my turn to choose a theme this time and I decided on 'Chalk it Up'. I originally intended to create a background with this cool chalk technique I came up with a few years ago, but I spotted the Halloween Blueprint stamps in my stash and ended up going in a totally different direction! Here's a quick tutorial:

I started by stamping the pumpkin onto one of Ranger's black tags and embossing it with Frosted Crystal embossing powder (you can see a full tutorial for this technique on Tim Holtz's blog). After it cooled, I rubbed it with chalk to give it the chalkboard look.

I loved the look of it, but I wanted just a bit of color. I decided to experiment with liquid chalk and Distress markers to see if I could get a colored chalk finish on my pumpkin. I started by coloring in the sections with the liquid chalk (you can find the brand I used on Amazon). After letting it dry, I carefully colored over it with the spiced marmalade marker. It worked! I added a bit of mustard seed after it dried to give it a more yellowy-orange color. After I finished, I made sure and scribbled the markers onto a scrap of paper to get rid of any chalk that had gotten on the tip.

A word of caution - while I'm pretty sure my markers will be fine, I can't guarantee it. If you want to be absolutely safe, you can scribble your marker onto a palette and use a brush to pick it up and color with it. And, while I didn't have time to try it, I'm sure you could press a Distress ink pad onto a craft sheet, pick up the ink with a brush and color with that. I did try a reinker and it didn't work at all - it wouldn't dry. So have fun experimenting, but be careful! I tend to be a bit adventurous with my supplies and I know not everyone is like that. ;)

Going Batty for Pop it Ups!

Happy Fall, everyone! Today, I'm sharing my Pop it Ups version of Tim Holtz's September tag. I haven't done one in ages, but absolutely fell in love with the technique he used and was dying to try it. Since we're getting closer to Halloween, I decided to make mine into a spooky pop-up card!

Here is the open view. I used Karen's Lucy Label set to create the pop up element from purple paper that had been stamped with Tim's Reverse Damask stamp. I used the same die to cut the label portion from a scrap of the technique paper, then trimmed it, added a rub on and adhered it to the card. The die also cuts a little tab at the top, which makes a nice place to add an extra little element. I decided to make another little bat, which I adhered to a strip of transparency so that he'd bounce around when the card is opened. To cover the adhesive, I used the small label from the set to cut another scrap of the technique paper. I cut it in half, added a rub on, and I had a little tombstone. Perfect!

Frilly & Funkie Challenge - Stamps Be Gone!

Happy Wednesday, all! Today I'm sharing my piece for the latest Frilly and Funkie challenge. Pamellia is our hostess and she wants us to put away our rubber stamps and get creative with other supplies. She says, 'How would you decorate your project if you didn't own any stamps? Embossing folders, stencils, or perhaps a little hand doodling? Well, let's put it to the test for this challenge. Other than a small sentiment, I would ask that you use no stamps at all on your vintage or shabby chic creations.'

I just got the new Fall Foliage dies by Tim Holtz and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to break them in. I've seen several fall lanterns on Pinterest lately and decided to make my own version - but out of paper, of course! Here's a quick look at how I made my lantern:

Begin by spraying a piece of lightweight white cardstock with various fall colored Distress Spray Stains. Spray both the front and back. Let dry.

When your paper is dry, place the new Fall Foliage dies where desired. I love that you can choose exactly what part of the paper you want to cut with these!

Die cut the leaves using your preferred machine. If you'd like to emboss them using the dies,  this tutorial by Tammy Tutterow shows you exactly how to do that. The extra dimension is a bonus with these dies! Once the leaves are embossed, highlight the veins with brown ink.

To create the lantern, cut the pieces shown above using Eileen Hull's Canister die from Sizzix. Cut the openings with Tim Holtz's Sized Arches.

Emboss the pieces and assemble, highlighting the embossing with gold paint. Cut pieces of clear plastic for windows and adhere (not shown).

Stain a length of seam binding with Fossilized Amber Distress Spray Stain. Cut two flowers from burlap using Tim Holtz's Mini Tattered Florals die and adhere together, along with a Gumdrop that's been colored with Butterscotch alcohol ink. Create a hanger with wire and attach to lid.

Now the fun begins! Decorate the lid of the lantern by first adhering the ribbon to the base of the hanger. Add the flower, then leaves, building up layers. Add a couple of acorns and you're done! Since this is made from paper, you can't burn a real candle, but the little LED votives work beautifully!
