12 Tags of 2012 - October

I was so looking forward to seeing what Tim Holtz would come up with for his October tag, and he certainly didn't disappoint! I love the paint dabber technique - I'd never done it before and it was so easy. I decided to try a slightly different color combination because I wanted kind of a twilight, nighttime look to mine. I have the Gothic Boo die that he used, but this Bell Jar die still has that 'new die' smell and I wanted to break it in some more!

The inside of my bell jar was inspired by something I saw on Downton Abbey (any fans out there? Mr. Bates? Mmmmm...). One of the bedrooms had the most beautiful bell jar displays. I decided to make my raven the glitter accent and give him a tree to perch on. The raven was cut from Grungeboard using the Sizzix Mini Raven die and glittered as Tim shows. I cut branches from Grungeboard using the Sizzix Branch Tree die. I painted them with an Espresso Dabber, sanded them, and then spritzed with a little Perfect Pearls mist.

For the base, I thought I'd give it a coating of Rock Candy Distress Crackle paint and then add some Black Soot Distress Stain. Then, I spotted my Brushed Pewter stain. Hmmm...it seemed like that would look pretty cool, and it does! Isn't the the coolest metal look? I love that part!

Here you can really see the shimmer of the Perfect Pearls Mist. I love the look of it with this background. I didn't have the ticket die or stamp that Tim used, so I just cut a manila scrap with my Tiny Tabs and Tags die, inked the tiniest tag and added the sticker. It's tied onto the bell jar with the new idea-ology Paper Twine. I shaded the edges of the bell jar with a little Pitch Black Dabber paint - if you smudge it with your finger you'll get a nice, soft shadow.

I hope you like my version of Tim's tag. I love that I always learn something new each month! All of the supplies I used are available from Inspiration Emporium via the links below. Remember to use my coupon code - stamptramp - to save 10% on your order!

  2. Hello Shelly, I love your take on Tim's tag and that bell jar is sooo Downton Abbey (I am a huge fan and love Mr Bates too, perhaps a tad too much!). The colour you have used is fabulous, definitely gives it a twilight quality and the spider web in the background gives it just the right amount of spookiness. Love it. A x

  25. Shelly, GREAT TAG! But, please share how you cut the "bell" part of the bell jar. Was it acrylic? If so, how did you glue it to the tag?
