12 Days of Ornaments - Day 9!

Hi everyone! With just three days left in my 12 Days of Ornaments project, I feel like I'm just hitting my stride. Today's ornament is definitely one of my faves so far. It was inspired by Donna Wright, one of my Karen Burniston Designer Challenge teamies. She made a felt ornament with Karen's Holiday House die, inspired by my ornament making. It's great when you can be both inspiring and inspired - that's what creating is all about!

When I saw that Donna used the house die, a little lightbulb went off. I'd been wanting to make a 3D house, but didn't think about using Karen's die to make it. All I had to do was alter the pieces a bit and add a new front and - presto! - an adorable little house. Since I'm trying to keep everything very nature-inspired, I made it out of all things woodsy. Read on to see how I made it:

Begin by adhering thin sheets of cedar to the new Elizabeth Craft Designs adhesive sheet. This will keep the wood from splitting when you die cut it.

Next, cut two house pieces using the house die. These will be the ends so they need to be trimmed a bit. Take about 1/4" off each edge.

Cut two more pieces using the house die, this time out of similar colored cardstock. Peel off the other release paper and adhere the wood house to the cardstock. See those little edges? Those become our tabs. Score along the edge of the wood and fold.

To create the front of the house, adhere another piece of cedar paper to an adhesive sheet. Cut to 2 1/8" x 2 1/2. Using the window opening die, cut two windows. Cut two window grids from white cardstock and two window coverings from mica, slightly larger than the opening.

Decorate the front of house as desired. I used a leaf that I adhered to an adhesive sheet and burlap for the portico and door. On the back panel, use the window opening die to cut a hole so that a Christmas light can be inserted. When you're finished, apply Elizabeth Craft Designs 1/4 adhesive tape to the tabs and assemble the house.

Cut a roof piece from burlap paper as shown and attach to top of house.

To create the base, adhere a piece of cedar paper to a piece of medium weight chipboard. Cut just a bit larger than the house. Use hot glue to attach it to the bottom of the house. Adhere various natural elements (this is the fun part!).

To cover the seams, add sticks along the edges and the top of the roof. Glue small pieces of moss to hide the gaps. Finally, add some tiny acorns to decorate the front of the house.
