Countdown to Creativity - Jumbo Tattered Florals

I promised you a nice surprise earlier this week, and here it is! If you haven't heard, Sizzix is pre-releasing three new dies from Tim Holtz this month: Jumbo Tattered Florals - a Bigz XL die, Garden Greens - a Bigz die, and Spring Greenery - a Sizzlits Decorative Strip die. All of the dies can be used with the Big Shot machine or the Vagabond. The Sizzix DT members were invited to create projects using the dies, and this is what I came up with. It's a sweet little shelf that is perfect for holding your keys and displaying small treasures!

Since the two Bigz dies are steel rule, I was excited to try cutting some aluminum flashing with them. They cut through that metal like it was nothing! I did end up adding a piece of folded cardstock under the die as a thin shim, just so it would cut the more intricate areas more easily.

After I cut the flowers, I embossed the largest one with Tim's Springtime Texture Fade. I shaped it a bit and then painted it with Picket Fence Distress Paint. To give it a rusted effect, I dabbed Vintage Photo Distress paint randomly and then embossed with Vintage Photo Distress embossing powder. I used the same method on the other blossoms, using blue and green shades of Distress Paint. I also embossed some areas with a bit of Ranger's Weathered White Antiquities embossing powder. I can't stop using that stuff!

I love that you can use the original Tattered Florals die with the new Jumbo version to make perfectly layered flowers. I used an awl to punch holes in the center and then connected them all with a brad.

Aren't these just the coolest?! One of my favorite parts are these rusty leaves. To make them, I cut more flashing with the Garden Greens die and then painted them with Antique Bronze and Vintage Photo Distress paints. While they were still wet, I sprinkled them with more Vintage Photo Distress embossing powder and embossed with my heat gun. They really do look like they are totally rusted!

The base for the shelf is a plain pine 1x8 that I cut to 16". I used Ranger's Vintage Photo Distress Stain to stain the outer edges. It might seem like it would be cheaper to use regular stain, but it ended up using just a tiny bit of my bottle and dried much faster than stain would have - plus, I had it on hand!

After the stain dried, I adhered a piece of decorative paper from the idea-ology Crowded Attic Paper Stash, sanding the edges to give it a vintage look. It's a bit hard to make out, but I added some stamping using Picket Fence Distress Paint. To give it a finished look, I added a little piece of painted cove molding on the top. Finally, I glued idea-ology Curio Knobs to the bottom. If I'd had time, I probably would have drilled holes and attached them with screws, but the glue is strong enough to hold lightweight objects like keys.
