Karen Burniston Designer Challenge - Barns, Barns, Barns!

Hi everyone! Today's project for Karen Burniston's Designer Challenge is not at all what I had intended to share. The card I was working on just did not want to come together the way I had it in my mind. After struggling with it for it a bit, I decided to move on. While I was going through my papers, I spotted one of my favorites from Tim Holtz, and a little lightbulb went off - I could convert Karen's new Barn die into a birdhouse!

Here's how I did it:

Adhere paper to a thin piece of chipboard (I used a cereal box) using Elizabeth Craft Designs double-sided adhesive. Using the Barn die and the Small Circle die, cut the pieces for the house. Cut another piece of chipboard to the depth you'd like the house to be, and score 1/4" from the edges, and at each point where it will bend to fit the barn.

Next, paint the chipboard with Antique Linen Distress paint and make small cuts into the outer score line as shown.

Stamp the piece and ink the edges. Apply ECD 1/4" double-sided tape to the tabs and join the front and back pieces.

Create a bottom panel from another piece of thin chipboard and hot glue in place.

To finish the birdhouse, paint a wood candlestick with Brushed Sage Distress Paint and hot glue to bottom of house. Add a dowel as a perch. Stamp the bird from Tim Holtz's Nature Walk set and color with Distress Markers. Attach bird to house and add embellishments as shown.

All the supplies I used can be found at Elizabeth Craft Designs and Simon Says Stamp via the links below. The Barn Pop Stand set will be available any day now!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed my adaptation of Karen's wonderful die. Be sure and check the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog on Wednesday for loads of inspiration from the team and a cool technique video from Karen.

Sending You Hogs and Kisses

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I have a super fun card to share with you today! This month's Karen Burniston Designer Challenge is all about her new Barn Pop Stand die set. I am absolutely in love with these new dies!

The front of my card is very simple - the sentiment gives a bit of a hint as to what's inside.

And here is the amazing barn, along with Virgil the Pig. So adorable! The Pop Stand die cuts perfect little tabs that the barn attaches to. And, how cool is this - the barn doors actually open and close. Behind the doors, I added a sentiment using Karen's new Farm Greetings stamp set. It was stamped on one of the dies from the coordinating Hay There Pop Stand die set.

I can't wait to play more with this set. I've seen what the other designers have been doing and it is such a versatile die. There are so many different directions you can take this one!

Most of the supplies I used can be found at Elizabeth Craft Designs via the links below. The Barn and Virgil will be in stock very soon.

Check back tomorrow for another fun card using these new dies. I think you'll love it!

Mixed Media May-hem with DecoArt Media

Hi all! Hope your week is off to a great start. Today I'm sharing my project for this month's Eileen Hull Art with Heart Challenge. This month we'll all be sharing creations we've made with DecoArt's Media paint line. I received a huge box of these paints, sprays, and texture products last year and have been having a blast with them!

I decided to alter Eileen's birdhouse and try my hand at a Finnabair-esque patina. My friend, Cyndi, had discovered this video a few weeks ago and inspired me give this technique a try. I have to say, I totally had a blast with this and can't wait to experiment some more! Here is how my piece came together:

Begin by cutting a birdhouse from medium weight chipboard using Eileen Hull's Birdhouse die.

To create a shadowbox, cut out the face of the birdhouse as shown. Assemble birdhouse and adhere various bits of torn paper.

Next, scrape DecoArt Media Crackle Paste and Texture Sand Paste randomly over the entire piece. Let dry completely.

When the texture mediums are dry, begin gluing various bits and pieces onto the birdhouse.

Cover entire piece with white gesso (I forgot to take a pic of this step!). When dry, spritz the embellished areas with Carbon Black Mister. Immediately spray with water, and dab off, leaving the black spray to highlight the texture.

When the black spray is dry, spritz birdhouse with various colors, as desired. I was trying to get a rusty verdigris look, so I used orange, yellow, and turquoise. Both the yellow and turquoise are shimmer mists, so you get wonderful depth of color with them.

When the piece is completely dry, highlight areas with gold rub on paint. Cut out a photo from one of Tim Holtz's Photobooth cards, add a Small Talk sticker and adhere inside box. Attach the bottom and you're done!

I love how aged and worn this looks, but it only took me a couple hours for this entire project - my kind of art!

I think this side might be my favorite. I love the vibrant yellow/orange on the crackle paste contrasted with the blue/green on the rest of the side. I used a hole punch to punch circles from lightweight chipboard for the 'nails'. All the other bits and pieces are various Tim Holtz, Prima, and other findings.

I hope you enjoyed the results of my DecoArt playtime! The birdhouse die is a bit hard to find, but I did track it down at Blue Moon Scrapbooking. The rest of the supplies I used can be found at Simon Says Stamp and Amazon.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed my DecoArt mixed media project. I'm really excited by these products and can't wait to play more with them. Speaking of playing, we hope you can join us for this month's Art with Heart challenge over at Eileen's blog. You can find out all the details here.

Have a great week!
