Inspired by - Halloween Scene

Hi all! It's time once again for Karen Burniston's Designer Challenge. This month, the amazing Caz Counsell chose the theme 'Inspired By'. We were to choose a designer and create something inspired by their design. Last month I fell in love with Raquel Mason's spooky cute cemetery scene and wanted to make one of my own, but with a slightly spookier feel.

The base of my scene was made from a disc of dollar store styrofoam that I covered with brown cardstock and painted with a Shabby Shutters Distress Paint dabber. I cut the fence several times from the same cardstock and then painted it with a Brushed Pewter Distress Paint dabber. The tombstones were cut from the same cardstock (brown is so versatile!) using the tombstone die from Karen's Halloween Scene set, and the bottom was sponged with more green paint. The tombstones were embossed with a combination of Wendy Vecchi's Watering Can embossing powder and white ep, to give them the look of stone. It was a bit dark so I sponged on a bit of Picket Fence paint to lighten it, then added a hand drawn border.

I stamped and embossed the 31 plaque using white embossing powder and hung it on the gate with a piece of black wire. Speaking of embossing powder, the theme over at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge blog this week is Powder Power, so I'm linking to that challenge as well!

You can find the supplies I used at Elizabeth Craft Designs and Simon Say Stamp via the links below.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed my take on Raquel's wonderful creation. And thanks so much to her for providing the inspiration. Be sure and check out Karen's blog tomorrow to see who the other designers were inspired by!

  1. Very spooky! I love the totally different looks you acheived with the same brown cardstock. That fence is perfectly creepy. I can almost hear the gate creaking on its hinges.

  2. WooooHooo! Love this sweet lil' spooky scene!
I did have a quick question. For the '31' plaque you say that you stamped then embossed using the white EP, but does the white then cover the black 31 ? how do you avoid it. Can you white emboss first then stamp the 31? Just wondering... :) TFS

    1. Thanks, Roxanne! The stamp is a negative, so you ink it with Versamark, stamp onto black cardstock, then emboss with white. The black 31 that you see is actually the cardstock peeking thru. Hope that makes sense! :)

  10. This is incredible! I kept staring at the fabulous details for so long that my husband thought I had gone into a coma! But how could I not want to take in every clever bit of this project? I especially love how it's a mix of spooky and whimsical. The trees are so clever and I love the texture you added around the headstones. This is a masterpiece and I enjoyed seeing it so much! Thanks for sharing your talents with us for this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge!
