UPDATE! Since a few of the dies I used for this card are no longer available, I've created an updated version using new dies by Karen Burniston. You can find the new version here: http://shellyhickox.blogspot.com/2014/08/glittery-steampunk-pop-it-ups-card.html
I am SO excited to finally get to share this project with you all! It's a birthday card I made for my dad using Karen Burniston's Accordion 3D and Bracket and Frames dies, along with all of my favorite dies, Texture Fades, Distress Stains, stamps, and embellishments from Tim Holtz. So much goodness in one card! You can find the full tutorial on the Inspiration Emporium blog HERE.
Here is the view when open. The gears appear to be floating, but they're all secured to acetate panels. Such a genius idea! I wish I could take full credit, but it was something that Karen mentioned to me a few weeks ago. Not only is Karen ridiculously talented, she is extremely generous with both her praise and her ideas!
I love the look of the measuring tape background on kraft paper. It looks almost like wood! The Clock Key die and the Gears Texture Fade are two of my favorite new products released at the past CHA show. And how cute is that little man stamp? Love him!
Here is the other end of the card - the gears were so much fun to play around with. I used Grungeboard, Foil Tape, and the Word Play die to create the numbers. One of my favorite techniques from Tim!
Here is another look at the card when open. It's so hard to really see how dimensional it is. I did a super quick video with my phone, just so you could see how it opens and closes:

ReplyDeleteI have to say again how cool this is Shelly! My son saw it and was awestruck, said "how'd she do that??" He says you have "mad skills" LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh this is soooo cool! I love it! I have so many males in the family to make this for! I better get saving for all the bits n pieces!
ReplyDeleteholy freakin' cow......this is theeee most amazing thing i've ever seen. like. ever. i know i could never do this....even if i had all the things to make it. you have genius brewing within you, dear. so....i have a question, which is going to be reeeeeeally a stupid one. i'm poor. seriously poor. i can't afford all the things that you've listed here, but want just a couple of sort-of possibly affordable things. but all i have is a cuttlebug. i hope you're not rolling your eyes and laughing out loud. i feel blessed to have that thing, i tell you. much as i crave the vagabond.....i'm grateful for the cuttlebug i have. so....the question is, would that bracket frame label and/or the accordion dies fit in that cuttlebug? you probably have no idea because maybe you didn't start out with a cuttlebug, but i'm just curious. sigh. sure would like to have those things, but i don't want to buy one online and discover that it won't feed through that thing. thanks for the help. and again.....everything you do is just.....perfect.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jenni! As a matter of fact, the Cuttlebug was my first die cutting machine. The great news is that both of these dies should fit just fine. I don't even think you'd need any different shims, other than the cutting plates you normally would use. And I would never roll my eyes! I know how it is to not have a lot of money for supplies and I'm a great supporter of using what you have. :)
DeleteJenni, You can use the bigz dies in your cuttlebug with the 2 B plates. I have used them until I bought my big shot last summer, for my birthday. The big shot or the big kick both do the same functions as the vagabond but they are not electric and they are much cheaper. You can buy the big kick at michaels and use coupons, so if you sometime want a different machine I would suggest getting the big kick at michaels. The only challenge might be the movers & shapers dies because they need the movers & shapers tray and I don't know if that would work in the cuttlebug. Check youtube that is where I learn lots of new techniques and info. I also have very, very little money, so I know how you feel, it is so very hard because everything seems so expensive.
